BiondVax Ltd. is developing an innovative flu vaccine that will provide universal multi-season/multi-strain protection against most human influenza virus strains, as well as the Avian flu. BiondVax’s universal vaccine is based on over 20 years of research and has already been proven effective in animal models including a "humanized mouse" and transgenic mice models.
The flu vaccine market has the fastest growth rate in the overall vaccine market. Influenza vaccine revenues are forecast to reach $4.0 billion by 2012, growing at a compound annual growth rate of over 13% between 2007 and 2012.
The influenza virus undergoes frequent and unpredictable antigenic changes in its surface protein resulting in new strains of the virus, which previous immunizations do not cover. Currently available vaccines are based on predictions as to which virus strain will be prevalent in the forthcoming season. Failure to accurately predict the prevalent strains and unexpected antigenic changes are the main reasons for the reduced efficacy of currently available vaccines. In the US alone, about 20,000-90,000 people die each year from the flu, and over 110,000 people are hospitalized annually due to flu-related complications. Vaccination against influenza is a high priority for primary prevention by the national health organizations.
BiondVax's proprietary universal multi-season/multi-strain vaccine utilizes the non-changing parts of the influenza virus, known as "conserved epitopes" that are common to the vast majority of flu virus strains, regardless of the antigenic changes that occur in the virus. The utilization of selected conserved epitopes are expected to provide greater efficacy levels, longer vaccination periods and a much wider scope of virus strain coverage than any other flu vaccine available today.
BiondVax’s team includes leading scientists in the fields of immunology and vaccine development, as well as experienced management executives with proven leadership skills in the biotechnology sector.
